An important decision

Reaching the end of high school means making a choice that will have a big influence on a student’s life. Choices must be made and this may be the first step towards being an adult for most students.

It is also a decision which affects the family and at Ecole Lemania, we want to help and advise students, making sure that the parents voice is heard and is part of the process.

Using the « Unifrog » platform to streamline the procedure, the choice of university, study programme and future career becomes clearer for students who have to narrow it down from thousands of options, to find that one important place to attend after completing the IB at Ecole Lemania.

Lemania - Student

Guidance adapted to the needs of each student

Students in Preparatory Year have the time to start using the « Unifrog » platform and explore what they might like to do in the future.

They will start to take tests which indicate preferences, highlight skills and identify areas and universities where they may want to study.

At this stage it is a helping hand to discover what is possible in the future and what is required to go to university.

Reflecting on this may also influence the subjects students choose for the IB or whether they take a subject at Higher or Standard level.

In IB1, students need to start thinking of their future. Leaving it all until IB2 is not a good idea. This is why we advise and help students to keep on track with their university search, by making this part of the curriculum.

If they haven’t already taken the preference and skill tests at this point, this is the moment to start. Following this is a comprehensive indentification of what they may want to study and where they may want to study. No choice is required until IB2.

The early part of the academic year requires considerable time to explore what comes next. Which country do I prefer, which location do I prefer, which language of study, large or small university, public or private, linked to a career or for a wider education, what are the entry requirements, will I be accepted? What are my other options?

Using the « Unifrog » platform and in collaboration with the programme director and counselor, students will answer all these questions and become aware that university application deadlines are not flexible. With this advice, students will apply on time to the universities of their choice.

The boarding school and IB advantages

IB Diploma

Diploma Programme

Many students study the IB Diploma to give themselves better university options as well as for the content and quality of the programme.

Taking an international high school diploma in English opens up options to study at universities around the world and exciting career pathways. Every year, IB Diploma students attend prestigious universities around the world and in Switzerland.

The IB Diploma is very popular with universities as it not only offers a wide range of academic subjects but it also develops an understanding of the world we live in through the CAS project.

This helps to give student a perspective on their own place and importance in their community and the world. As a result, students are prepared to cope with the step up to university level study and a more independent lifestyle.

Boarding

Students at boarding school tend to be more mature and independent than day school students. Living away home, moving to a new environment and adapting to this, means that the transition to university is less daunting and students usually settle in better than non-boarding school students.

At Ecole Lemania, boarding students have diverse backgrounds and students are continually learning about and from other cultures. This exposure helps to develop an open, global mindset.

Class sizes are small, allowing more interaction and development of ideas in class that university study requires.

Importantly boarders learn how to be responsible for themselves with practical skills such as time management, managing pocket money or mobile phone usage and personal discipline that they take with them to university.

« Unifrog » platform brings the process together

Ecole Lemania uses the Unifrog platform to help students make the right choice. This also allows parents to participate and be involved in the process, makes it easier for teachers to follow student progress and ensures that students stay on track with the application process.

Unifrog brings all the information students need to make an informed choice into on user-friendly format. From taking an initial preference test, to sending a complete application to an Ivy League or Oxbridge university, the platform guides and prompts students along the way.
With this tool, students will have access to thousands of universities and programmes with information about fees, entrance requirements, housing, lifestyle, the application process and much more.

Lémania - IB Experience

What influences the final decision?

Scholarships are more likely to be found in the USA than Europe. However if a student holds an EU country passport, they will pay a lower fee than a non-EU citizen.

It is useful to look at all possible options in the application process. The best programme or scholarship might be available far from home but family ties, friends and relationships can influence the final decision.

Studying at a large university offers a different experience from a smaller one. Science, sports and other facilities will differ. Big city location or located outside town, all female university, religious affiliation etc Student need to take the time to think about what they want and how they want to live and study.

This is not important for all students but some will choose a highly ranked university. This may not be the best way to choose for all students but it can help to be an alumni of a university with a globally known name.

Matching the choice of university programme to your skills is a good way to choose. This way students are more likely to enjoy and immerse themselves in the learning process.
